The Project
Originating from a student association initiative, AlmeMed has rapidly evolved into an early-stage MedTech startup driven by clinical necessity and applied research. Recently, we successfully presented at the TEF Demo Day, where AlmeMed was selected as one of the Top 12 Startups from an initial pool of over 100 candidates. This achievement secured a €2,000 grant, which will be strategically utilized to accelerate the R&D and engineering of our prototype.
ICU Problem
Our journey started by observing one of the most stressful environments in healthcare: the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In the ICU, patients are highly fragile, and every minute counts. We realized that while medicine has advanced, the diagnostic tools used to monitor life-saving drugs are still tied to slow, centralized laboratories. We decided it was time to bring the laboratory directly to the patient.
Narrow Therapeutic Index (NTI) antibiotics are crucial for fighting severe infections like sepsis. However, the line between an effective dose and a toxic dose is incredibly thin. Currently, hospitals rely on centralized labs for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, forcing doctors to wait up to 6 hours for results. This delay can lead to treatment failure, severe kidney damage, or prolonged mechanical ventilation.
